A Favorite Little Treat
Anyone who is from there or any of the surrounding locations knows that West Virginia has a delectable little secret. It’s a favorite food. WV is the state, (Yes West Virginia is it’s own state, not a part of Virginia), that is credited with creating it. It started, (to my knowledge), in the northern part of the state.
Below I’m sharing affiliate links to some of my favorite products that I use to make these rolls.
Although I don’t think any one person is credited with its creation. It’s popularity extends to every part of the state, from the 2 panhandles to the deep mountainous coal country. You can find them in most restaurants, road side convenience stores, gas stations and pizza places.
I’ve seen versions of a food on Pinterest called a Pepperoni Roll that looks more like a Pizza rolled up than West Virginia Pepperoni Rolls. These rolls are exactly that, a dinner roll with pepperoni stuffed inside. You can usually find them in 2 varieties; with cheese and without cheese. I like BOTH!
Serve them with a side salad or veggie for a quick dinner at home. They make a great snack for a sporting party or youth event. I’ve even taken them along to potlucks and they are always a big hit. These little treats are great on a night when you have to be moving around town. You can make them up ahead of time, freeze, thaw in the morning and let rise, then bake for about 20 minutes for a convenient meal.
Pepperoni Rolls (Here is my version).
I use my handy staple bread dough recipe to make the bread.
- 1 frozen bread dough (thawed)
- apx. 48 slices of pepperoni
- Mozzarella Cheese
- Divide into even roll size portions.
- Flatten each portion.
- Lay 4 pepperoni slices on top.
- Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese (if desired).
- Let rise until about doubled in size.
- Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
- Can be served hot or at room temp.
