A while ago I received a question from a reader who asks:
“Should I have a homeschool name ? If so, how do you decide?” ~Vicky
Vicky and I chatted for a bit and I asked her to think about her homeschool purpose. Then I got to thinking that maybe others could benefit from this discussion. So I’m sharing some tips here.
Legally speaking, in most states you are not required to offer a name for your homeschool. North Carolina, does require naming your school. Please check, hslda.org for specific laws in your own state.
Naming your school is a personal decision that each family makes. Using a name on your notification letter and assessments, as well as in communications with vendors helps to legitimize the purpose of your school. It offers others a chance to see that you are serious about your decision.
Many homeschooling families name their school after their family, such as Brown Academy or Brown Homeschool. But, you can be as creative as you want to be when making this decision.

5 Tips for Naming Your Homeschool
- Consider your purpose for home-education.
- Think about your geographical region. (Perhaps you live in the mountains, or prairie, maybe you live near a stream or a grove of trees).
- Research scriptures which may be in line with the purpose of your school and can give you inspiration. This is how we chose the name of our academy, Great Peace Academy is taken from the verse, Isaiah 54:13.
“And your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thine children.”
This verse specifically speaks to teaching our child by the Lord and that in doing so our children will know peace. Both of these points are exactly what the goal of our school is, so for us it was the perfect choice.
- Determine your teaching method and perhaps incorporate that method into your school name. Ideas: Classically Trained Academy, Charlotte’s Learning School, Montessori Academy of Higher Learning, School of Trivium Learning, Your Name Eclectic Homeschool, Not Brick and Mortar UnSchool.
- Perhaps, name your school in memorial. Memorialize a family member, W.R. Aleshire Academy, that’s my dad, an historic great; Ben Franklin Academy, artist; Little Davinci Home School, or even your child’s name; Jonathan’s Home School.
Consult with your family and choose together. Let it be a reflection of your family. There are no right or wrong names, whatever you choose will be the right choice.
After my initial conversation with Vicky I received this follow-up;
“We discussed our name with the kids and have decided upon“Creekside Christian School.”
Additionally they have chosen Psalm 1:3 as their theme verse.
“He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.” NKJV
Vicky shared with me that they live near a creek and her kids are often found playing in it. I think that is a perfect verse to go along with the very fitting name of their school.
